Choose remodeling materials without losing track of the budget

Start with how the room is used

Write down the room, cleaning routine, pets, traffic and the look you want. Ask the supplier for the manufacturer’s intended-use and maintenance information for each exact product. The word waterproof on one component does not establish the performance of a complete installation.

Compare complete options

For flooring, ask about preparation, transitions, baseboards and installation. For countertops, ask about templating, edge treatment, cutouts and installation. For cabinets, clarify boxes, fronts, hardware and fitting. Ask the installer to confirm compatibility before placing an order.

Test the sample in your home

Look at physical samples together in daylight and under your evening lighting. A render or screen can change how color and texture appear. Photograph the samples for your own comparison and record the brand, model, finish and supplier beside each one.

Keep selection and availability together

For each selection, save the current quote, lead time, return conditions and an acceptable alternative. Confirm dimensions and quantities with the responsible professional. Keep safety-related product specifications and any required approvals with the project documents.
